Keeping Families Close Since 1996
When a child is seriously ill or injured, everything changes in an instant. Families shouldn’t have to worry about where they’ll sleep, how they’ll afford another hotel night, or whether they’ll be close enough when their child needs them most.
Since 1996, Ronald McDonald House Southern Appalachian has provided a warm, welcoming home-away-from-home for families traveling to receive medical care for their child. We believe that healing happens best when families can stay together, and our mission is to remove the burdens of travel, lodging, and daily living so parents can focus on what matters most: their child.
Our House serves families with children age 21 and younger receiving medical treatment at hospitals throughout the Southern Appalachian region. Every month, families facing more than 20 different medical conditions – including premature birth, cancer, respiratory illnesses, emergency care, surgeries, and other complex diagnoses – find comfort, support, and community under our roof.
The House is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, allowing families to come and go as their child’s medical needs require. During their stay, families enjoy private guest rooms, home-cooked meals, fully equipped kitchens, laundry facilities, indoor and outdoor play spaces, and the compassionate support of staff and volunteers who help make a difficult journey a little easier.
At Ronald McDonald House Southern Appalachian, we do more than provide a place to stay – we provide hope, comfort, and the priceless gift of keeping families together when they need each other most.
Every family’s journey is different, and we do everything we can to keep loved ones together. When space allows, grandparents, siblings, and other immediate family members are welcome to stay alongside the child’s caregivers, providing comfort and support during an incredibly difficult time.
Although it costs an average of $350 per night to provide a family’s stay – including a private guest room, meals, laundry facilities, and the comforts of home – families are never charged for their time at Ronald McDonald House. Thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, corporate partners, and our community, every eligible family can focus on what matters most: their child’s care, not the cost of being nearby.
More than a place to stay, Ronald McDonald House is a place of comfort, connection, and hope. Here, families can prepare a home-cooked meal, find a quiet place to rest, watch their children play, and connect with others who understand the challenges of having a hospitalized child. In life’s most difficult moments, we strive to provide more than a roof overhead – we provide a home where families can stay together, find strength, and heal alongside one another.
